Introduction

Having sound business practices and clear policies is the first step to creating a self-regulating positive learning environment. Think of your business practices as how you communicate your core values as a teacher and dancer through policies, pricing and procedures. These core values are the key to attracting students who are drawn to those same values and who will contribute to and nurture the learning environment. Whichever set of values you communicate through your business practices, those are the values you are inviting to the learning environment.

When seeking services, don’t you like to know you are dealing with experts and professionals? When you spend your hard-earned money on a product or service, you want to be reassured that the provider knows what they are doing, right? If you’re like me, you probably don’t mind spending a little more money at a business that is organized, friendly and runs efficiently than a business that is disorderly and unpredictable, even if they offer the same quality product or service.

Whether you are employed or contracted by someone else, or you rent your own studio space, how you conduct your business is key to building a positive relationship with your student base. Even if you are not in charge of the business, it is important to align yourself with entities that are organized, efficient, and treat their employees well, who in turn treat their customers well.
